Food ideas that may sound disgusting but you should try

My dad is Australian and my mom is Vietnamese, so growing up, my culinary experiences were different from those of my friends. They were mostly influenced by my dad's Aussie side and my mom's living-in-Australia-and-trying-to-asssimilate side. Oh, and this post may have been influenced by a recent recipe post on my friend Jewy McJewison's blog. But she has a really good blog!

1) Ketchup on French toast. Or as the Australians say: tomato sauce on French toast. I've never understood using syrup instead. It's a savory dish, not a sweet one. My favorite way of enjoying it was to have my dad cut my French toast into small squares and then dipping each square in a mound of ketchup.
2) Cheese on toast. Take liberal amounts or strawberry or raspberry jam (maybe orange marmalade) and spread on whole wheat toast. Then cut sharp cheddar cheese into thin slices and put on top of jam. Enjoy deliciousness.
3) Bread and jam and cream. Again, take liberal amounts or strawberry or raspberry jam and spread on untoasted whole wheat bread. Take a carton of cream (the kind used to make whipped cream) and poor over bread until cream is just dripping off sides.
4) Sprinkle sandwiches. Also called fairy bread. It's butter on white bread covered in those little round colored sprinkles with a second slice of bread on top. Good for birthdays while I was growing up.
5) Pears in tacos. This one is all mine. I used to be a really picky eater, especially when it came to food texture. When we had tacos, the ground beef used to freak me out a bit. I think because it was brown and squishy. So instead, I would just take a taco shell, put sliced pears inside and sprinkle with grated cheese. I haven't had this since I was like 8, but I assume I would still find it delicious.

What have we learned about Australian food tastes? My blog is nothing if not educational. Australians enjoy bread, fruit (especially in jam form), and combining fruit and cheese.

1. I prefer syrup. Especially since my french toast normally comes with cinnamon and powdered sugar.
2 & 3. I have had and very much approve of.
4. Sounds cute.
5. Curious to try. Would you still put salsa on it?

How on earth did you manage to talk about Australian eating habits and not mention Vegemite. Shame.

because vegemite doesn't sound disgusting. just the sound of it makes my mouth water.
1) there would not be cinnamon or sugar within 50 feet of french toast in my home

So what you're saying is A) you don't keep any cinnamon or sugar in your kitchen, or B) you have a special room located at least 50 feet from your kitchen in which you cook french toast.

Oh, and Ron Paul is having a rally at Independence Mall this Saturday.
