Philasmellphia

Once, I had some people visit from Miami. They commented that they never knew how good Miami smelled until they came to Philadelphia. Every block in this city you encounter a new and always offensive smell. The narrow streets usually smell like the gutter water. When you're in Center City, you usually breathe in whatever comes up from the sewer grates. When you're crossing the South Street bridge, you suck in gas fumes. Sometimes you get a mix between two smell fronts, like when you're next to the cheesesteak cart and someone who hasn't showered in a while walks by. As I was walking past World Cafe Live this morning, I smelled the worst stench I have come across in the past 3 years. It smelled like something had died and then been covered in onions that were now decaying and getting moldy themselves. I have no idea what it was, and I was on the bridge, so there absolutely could have been a dead animal wrapped in onions beneath it.

The worst for me was when I use to walk over the South St bridge and the garbage train would be parked underneath during the humid, sweltering heat of July. I eventually trained myself to hold my breath for four minutes. Ah, Philly.

Hilarious - is there a fish market in town? In college when me and my friend wanted to go out to dinner, we had to walk through a fish market on the way there and on the way back. You REALLY had to want dinner to still want it once you got to the restaurant.
